A very simple answer: You can buy a $5 bottle of wine or a $500 bottle of wine. They are both wines, so what’s the difference? One word: Quality.
Just like the above example, private dance lessons costs vary based on the quality of the dance instructions. Now quality dance instructions can only come from quality instructors. The dance business is not regulated by the government, so anyone, and I really mean anyone can call him/herself dance instructor. It’s not like a massage therapist or any other professions where you need to go to school and get a diploma because otherwise you cannot work.
There are a lot of so called ” dance instructors” that teach at low rates because it’s a hobby for them. These dance instructors usually have a full time job, but they are happy to make extra money doing something they love to do anyway. However the quality of the instructions is questionable because they don’t have much training or very little if any. They usually charge under $50 per hour.
The next group of dance instructors is the so called “trained dance instructors”. They usually work at franchise dance studios. These instructors are brand new to dancing in general but have training for a few weeks prior to teaching new students. These are ideal for people wanting to learn just a few steps and not care so much about dance techniques. These new instructors aren’t capable on taking experienced dancers students because they don’t have the knowledge or experience themselves to give back. You can only teach what you know. Unfortunately, the brand new students don’t know enough to make a difference between a brand new instuctor and a veteran instuctor; as a result, dance studios charge the same for all instructors.
The next group of dance instructors are those who can provide some quality dance instructions. Expect to pay a bit more because these instructors have spend considerably a lot of time and money for their training. While most kids go to college or university to earn a degree, the majority of dancers that started early in life skipped attending college and therefore don’t have any degrees other than dancing. They should be seen and rewarded as a professional.
The next group of dance instructors are called “expert dance instructor” or “coach”. This group of instructors are called experts because they have spent over 10,000 hours in training. Their fees for dance instructions are equivalent to a doctor visit or a lawyer consultation. If you want to have regular dance training from these group of instructors, expect to pay over $100 per hour. Dance instructions at this level are usually provided to experienced students or professional dancer. It’s well worth every penny.
